Hungarian Canoeing Olympic Gold Medalist Dies During Practice

Gyorgy Kolonics During a training session two-time Olympic canoeing gold medalist Gyorgy Kolonics of Hungary died on Tuesday after collapsing in his canoe. The 36-year-old lost consciousness and paramedics were not able to resuscitate him, the Hungarian Olympic Committee said, adding that the probable cause of death was heart failure.

"Kolonics was a true legend of Hungarian sports, an athlete at the peak of his career who was in a class by himself," Hungarian Olympic Committee President Pal Schmitt.

His achievements:
1996 Atlanta Olympics: Gold medal in the 500-meter canoe doubles. Bronze medal in 1,000-meter doubles race with Csaba Horvath.

2000 Sydney Olympics: Gold medal in the 500-meter singles.

15 world championships between 1993-2007.

2008 European Championships: Silver medal in the 500-meter doubles race.
